The Strengthening Families Together Education Course is a psycho-educational course designed specifically for family members and loved ones who have a relative with a severe mental illness.
This is a 10 week course, offered in the Fall and the Spring, is co-facilitated by two trained BCSS family members and is usually held on a Thursday evening from 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm. The curriculum focuses on major psychiatric illnesses emphasizing the clinical treatment of these illnesses and teaching the knowledge and skills that family members need when faced with the problems of mental illness. The course enables family members to tell their own stories, relate to each other’s problems and get to know and support each other. The course includes discussion of medication, handling crises, empathizing with the ill family member and communicating effectively. It also emphasizes self-care and discusses rehabilitation, fighting the stigma of mental illness and advocating on behalf of your family member.
The Strengthening Families Together is a newly developed Canadian Edition of the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Course.
The course is free but space limited. If you are interested in participating, please contact BCSS Victoria Branch by phone (250) 384-4225 or email admin.bcss@shaw.ca
