Kids in Control

Who is Kids in Control for? For children aged 8-13 who have a family member (mom, dad, brother or sister) who has a mental illness. Groups run in the Spring and Fall.

Kids in Control is meant to be a place to: Learn ~ Have fun ~ Share with other kids ~ Have a say in what goes on.

What if you don’t feel like sharing? You don’t have to talk about private family stuff if you don’t want to. We hope that you will feel safe and OK to share your stories and experiences if you want to, but you will never be pressured to talk.

What kind of things will we do? Play Games ~ Do role plays ~ Chat with each other ~ Do arts and crafts ~ Write down our ideas and thoughts (journaling)
Each week has a different focus: Learning about mental illness. Learning about the treatments that can help someone get better. Learning about the feelings and how to cope when you’re feeling bad. Learning where to go for help if you need it.

What will you get out of Kids In Control?: Make new friends ~ Build confidence ~ Have fun ~ Learn about coping strategies ~ Eat great food ~ Learn more about mental illness ~ Watch videos ~ Benefit from peer support

How often do we meet? We meet one evening a week for 8 weeks. We provide supper each week too (usually pizza or burgers!). Kids in Control usually has two groups each year, one in the spring and one in the fall.

How do I join? Kids in Control is a free program of BCSS Victoria Branch. Call the BCSS office at (250) 384-4225 and leave a message for the Kids in Control facilitator. You will be called back and the facilitator will answer your questions and let you know when the group starts.
