Our resource center has books, video’s, DVD’s, magazines and pamphlets about schizophrenia and other mental illnesses available for borrowing.
Books are divided into nine categories:
Research and Treatment: Books in this section include the classic “Surviving Schizophrenia” by E. Fuller Torrey, “Brave New Brain,” by Nancy Andreasen, which presents current brain research and “Cognitive Therapy of Schizophrenia” by Turkington & Douglas.
Help for Families: “The Complete Family Guide to Schizophrenia” by Kim Mueser and “When someone you Love has a Mental Illness” by Rebecca Woolis are two popular books in this section.
Family Experiences: Books in this section deal with individual family experiences of copinf with an ill family member and include”My Mother’s Keeper-A Daughter’s memoir of Growing Up in the Shadow of Schizophrenia” by Margaret Moorman and “Troubled Journey: Coming Terms with the Mental Illness of a Sibling or Parent” by Diane Marsh.
First Person Accounts: This section has books written by people living with a menatl illness and includes such titles as “Welcome Silence: My Triumph Over Schizophrenia” by Carol North, “recovered Not Cured” by Richard McLean, “The Quiet Room: A Journey Out of the Torment of Madness”by Lori Schiller and “The Center Cannot Hold” by Elyn Saks.
Self-Help: Books in this section teach recovery and self-management skills and strategies for dealing with mental illness and include the popular WRAP (Wellness recovery Action Plan) books by Mary Ellen Copeland.
Other Illnesses: This section has books on such illnesses as depression, bi-polar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and borderline personality disorder.
Books for Children: Books in this section range from picture books for young children to books for teenagers.
Drug Therapy: There are several books in this section describing current medications.
Reference: This section includes the DSM Manual, information about the mental health act and current disability regulations. items in this section are for library use only.
Periodicals: We subscribe to several magazines that can be borrowed:

- Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal- quarterly
- Network- three times per year
- Transition- quarterly

Library books can be loaned out for four weeks maximum. Video’s & DVD’s can be borrowed for one week maximum. Reference books cannot leave the office. Borrowing is free to members; for non-members three is a $2.00 non-refundable borrowing fee each time an item is borrowed. Items can be returned between 9am-4pm Mon-Fri.
Tara Timmers our Administrative Coordinator has written an article which appears in the current issue of VISIONS Magazine Vol. 5 No. 31 2009. The theme is WORKPLACES and her article is entitled Transitioning from Disability Pension to Full-time Work, Scary but Liberating. it is about her journey to full time employment.Copies can be borrowed from the BCSS, Victoria Library or found at www.heretohelp.bc.ca/publications/visions
